Oh the snow of winter 2015, snow, snow, and more snow. All that snow made it difficult to get around. When the snow finally melted, or at least, melted enough for people to get around the joy was evident. Walkers, runners, people everywhere. I was one of those people and while it was great, it sure was messy. The melting snow had given way to garbage. Lots of it.  My friend, Luke MacDonald also anxious to get outside for a run, did a quick loop around his neighbourhood and he felt great.  And motivated. Luke is always looking for a way to challenge himself and others, and so, the “National Litter Run” was born.  A few Facebook posts, tweets, and word of mouth had people involved. The idea was to pick up the garbage along your regular running route.  Luke and a friend did a 5k run along Quinpool Road in Halifax. It took an hour and 15 minutes and they collected 19 bags of garbage!  Word quickly spread and before long a date was set. Dec 4, 2015 would be National Litter Run Day.

I accepted the challenge, along with my running partner, Darrell. We did a 5k run and picked up 3 bags of garbage. It was an absolute blast!  People wanted to help, to get involved. Pick up litter.  Crazy, right?  But crazy is contagious. Groups in Cole Harbour, throughout the greater Halifax area, and as far away as Kenya and The Gambia, all started litter running.

Since it was so much fun, the plan is to make it even bigger and an annual event - stay tuned for updates on World Litter Run Day happening the weekend of April 16, 2016!

We are very pleased to announce that as of yesterday we have a new logo for the NSFA!

Also, the first annual Brunch'n'Learn was a huge success.

So many "thank-yous" to do, and a few "congrats" too:
    - Congratulations to Cheryl, Zena and Jan, winners of the door prize draws. Each received a full 5-video set of the Bellyfit® Elements dvd series!
    - And congratulations to Margaret who was awarded her Bellyfit® Instructor Certification. She will be continuing her learning to bring Bellyfit:Sage® to Nova Scotia some time in the new year. Well done, Margaret!

    - Thank you to Dr. Laurene Rehman for a fabulous presentation. We hope to see you presenting again at future events.
    - Thanks to Kim, Sandra and the entire kitchen team at Chartwells at MSVU. We loved it, as always!
    - And finally we'd like to express our gratitude to our big sponsor Bellyfit International for their very generous donation of the Bellyfit® Elements dvd series.

And, of course, thanks to everyone who participated at the event and behind the scenes.

There will be an online feedback form e-mailed to the participants in a few days.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again in April for the ELS (Exercise Leadership Summit)!

    Hello Fitness Friends!

We have an exciting Fall season happening in the fitness industry in Nova Scotia.  As you can see, we have a new website up and running.  It is still somewhat bare but we are adding information and pictures all the time, so please check back often.

As we are into a new board term there are some personnel changes to announce.  We would like to express our deep appreciation of the work done in the last two years by our Vice Chair, April Stroink. April has decided not to renew her seat on the board and is stepping down to work on other aspects of her career.  April stepped forward to help renew the NSFA when we hadn't had a board for a while, and was instrumental in getting us up and running again.

Board Secretary Rayanne Hunter is stepping into the Vice Chair role.  Due to a shortage of people available to volunteer, Jennifer Ross has agreed to combine the Treasurer and Secretary.  Jessica Goreham-Penney is joining the board as the new Member At Large.  Brigitte MacInnes and Terri Roberts are renewing for another term in their respective roles.

We are still looking for a representative from each of our provincial regions and a second Member-At-Large.  The 2nd MAL position can be filled by anyone in Nova Scotia who has an interest in the standards of the fitness industry.  Please contact a board member if you are interested in any of our open positions.

We are also hosting our first Fall event in several years.  We are having a Brunch'n'Learn session on November 21st at Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax.  The event is from 9:00am until noon, so those traveling into the city from other areas across the province will have time to do some holiday shopping before heading home.   Please visit our Events page for details and online registration.

The Board of Directors has several other projects in the works, none of which we can report on just yet.  Rest assured, there are all good things, and we are very excited about the progress we are making.

    See you at the Brunch!

    The Board
