NSFA Certification Pathway for Newfoundland & Labrador Leaders

Welcome to the Nova Scotia Fitness Association website!

Residents of Newfoundland & Labrador who wish to become certified fitness leaders can complete their full certification pathway through the Nova Scotia Fitness Association (NSFA). All NSFA certifications align with national Fitness Leadership Canada (FLC) standards and are recognized across Canada.

Below is the pathway from start to finish.

    • 1.       Begin with Exercise Theory
    • Start with our self‑directed online Exercise Theory course, which covers anatomy, muscle movement, safety, and the foundations of exercise leadership.
    • 2.       Write the Exercise Theory Exam
    • Once prepared, book your online proctored ET exam through the NSFA; passing ET is required before any certification is awarded.
    • 3.       Choose Your Certification Stream
    • Select the certification that matches your teaching goals, such as Group Exercise Leader (GEL) or Weight Trainer (WT).
    • 4.       Complete Your Certification Training
    • Attend the required course sessions (online or in‑person, depending on the certification) and prepare for your written and practical evaluations.
    • 5.       Obtain First Aid/CPR-C & AED
    • All leaders must hold current Basic First Aid, CPR‑C, and AED certification from a CSA‑approved provider before certification can be finalized.
    • 6.       Complete Evaluations and Final Requirements
    • Finish your written and practical evaluations for your chosen certification to demonstrate competency and readiness to lead safely.
    • 7.       Maintain Your Certification Annually
    • Keep your NSFA membership active, maintain current First Aid, and earn 6 CECs per year to stay certified and insured.
